What an EICR involves

An Electrical Installation Condition Report tests every circuit at the consumer unit, inspects a sample of sockets, switches and fittings, and grades any defects (C1 danger present, C2 potentially dangerous, C3 improvement recommended, FI further investigation). C1 and C2 findings make the report 'unsatisfactory' and need remedial work.

Landlords in England must hold a satisfactory EICR, renewed at least every 5 years, and provide it to tenants.

Common questions

How long does an EICR take?
Two to four hours for a typical property, longer for older installations with many circuits. Power is switched off circuit-by-circuit during testing.
