Common questions
Can I replace a socket myself?
In England, replacing a socket like for like is not notifiable under Part P, wherever it is in the home, so the law does not require a registered electrician for it, though Approved Document P says it should still be installed and tested to BS 7671. A new circuit, a consumer unit replacement, or adding to or altering a circuit in the space around a bath or shower is notifiable: it must be self-certified by an installer registered with a competent person scheme, or certified by a registered third-party certifier or a building control body. If you're asking, it's usually a sign to book an electrician.
